What are the penalties for cheque bounce under Indian law?

Under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, the penalties for cheque bounce can include:

• Imprisonment up to 2 years,

• A fine up to twice the cheque amount, or

• Both.
  The court may also order the drawer to compensate the payee for the cheque amount.
