How long can police detain someone without filing charges?

For cognizable offenses, police can detain a person without charges for up to 24 hours. For continued detention, they must present the accused before a magistrate. If the investigation requires more time, police can request judicial custody for up to 90 days for serious offenses or 60 days for less severe crimes.
